Our Mission Statement

The goal of the Ozarks Literacy Council is to increase literacy in Southwest Missouri by providing free tutoring and learning services to those unable to read, write or compute at levels necessary to function fully and contribute successfully on the job, in their communities and in society as a whole.

Ozarks Literacy Council Staff

Paula Shumaker Yount, Executive Director

Paula is a Springfield resident and has worked in the training and motivation field for over 20 years. Paula is no stranger to the non-profit world; she was the executive director of Junior Achievement of the Ozarks for over six years.  She is a certified trainer and owner of Monday Motivation, a business that is over 10 years old and has 16,000 readers in 27 states. In April of 2002, she started "A Little Help Along The Way," an e-mail publication sent each Monday and Wednesday to women. Paula is founder of the Executive Womenâs Club, a 22 year old womenâs organization in Springfield, and a regular columnist in Todayâs Woman Magazine. She and husband Bob have four grown children between them and two grandchildren.

Identifying clients is relatively simple, but securing participation may sometimes be more daunting.  It is the belief of OLC, however, that problems of literacy must be addressed as part of a larger family and social structure.
